Who lags for dread of daily work,
And his appointed task would shirk,
Commits a folly and a crime;
A soulless slave-a paltry knave-
A clog upon the wheels of Time.
With work to do, and store of health,
The man’s unworthy to be free,
Who will not give, that he may live,
His daily toil for daily fee.

—Daily Work: Mackay

O, there’s a good in labor, if we labor but aright,
That gives vigor to the daytime, and sweeter sleep at night;
A good that bringeth pleasure even to the toiling hours,
For duty cheers the spirit, as dew revives the flowers.
Then say not that our God gave labor as a doom
No! ’tis the richest mercy from the cradle to the tomb.

—Music of Labor: Anonymous

Self-ease is pain; thy only rest
Is labor for a worthy end,
A toil that gains with what it yields,
And scatters to its own increase
And hears while sowing outward fields
The harvest song of inward peace.

—J. G. Whittier
